Leaked Renders Suggest Apple’s Foldable iPhone Could Resemble iPad Mini

Leaked design images circulating online suggest that Apple’s long rumored foldable iPhone may resemble a compact tablet similar to the iPad mini when fully opened. The images, reportedly shared by well known Apple leaker Sonny Dickson, provide an early look at what could become Apple’s first foldable smartphone. Although Apple has not officially confirmed the device, the new renders are fueling speculation that the company could finally enter the foldable smartphone market with a major product launch expected in 2026.
The images show both folded and unfolded views of the device and appear to support earlier rumors about Apple experimenting with a larger foldable display format. Industry analysts say Apple has been studying foldable technology for several years, waiting for improvements in durability and display performance before releasing its own product. If accurate, the leaked designs indicate that Apple could adopt a tablet style folding device rather than the book style or clamshell designs currently used by many competitors.
Foldable Design Appears Similar to Compact Tablet
The leaked CAD style images suggest that the foldable iPhone could expand into a screen size comparable to Apple’s iPad mini when unfolded. This design approach would allow the device to function as both a smartphone and a compact tablet, providing users with a larger workspace for applications, multitasking, and media consumption.
The renders show a clean device layout with a centered pinhole selfie camera on the front display. When the device is unfolded, an additional camera appears to be positioned near the top left corner of the expanded screen. This configuration could allow Apple to maintain strong camera performance while adapting to the unique design challenges of foldable hardware.
The rear section of the device features a horizontal camera bar containing two lenses along with a separate flash module. While the exact camera specifications remain unknown, the layout suggests Apple may prioritize a slim design while maintaining strong photography capabilities.
Several other hardware elements appear consistent across the leaked renders. The camera lenses are aligned horizontally and the volume buttons appear to be positioned on the left side of the device. These design choices may help maintain usability when switching between folded and unfolded modes.
Apple’s Entry Into the Foldable Smartphone Market
Foldable smartphones have been gradually gaining popularity since Samsung introduced its first foldable Galaxy device in 2019. Several manufacturers including Huawei, Oppo, Xiaomi, and Motorola have since released foldable devices with different design approaches.
Despite the growing market segment, Apple has not yet introduced its own foldable product. Industry observers believe the company has been carefully studying consumer behavior, durability issues, and supply chain readiness before committing to a launch.
Analysts say Apple tends to enter new hardware categories later than competitors but focuses on refining the technology before introducing a product to the mass market. This strategy was previously seen with products such as the Apple Watch and AirPods, which entered existing markets but quickly became dominant due to design improvements and ecosystem integration.
If Apple releases a foldable iPhone, the device could reshape competition in the foldable smartphone market. Apple’s large customer base and strong ecosystem of services could drive broader adoption of foldable devices worldwide.
Leak Details Raise Questions About Final Design
While the leaked images have generated strong interest among technology enthusiasts, it remains unclear whether the renders are based on official design specifications or early concept models. Sonny Dickson, who shared the images, did not provide additional details about their origin or confirm their accuracy.
The renders show the device in two different color variations, though these colors may not reflect the final production design. Earlier rumors had suggested that the rear camera module might feature an all black design rather than a color matched finish.
Another uncertainty involves the physical dimensions of the device. The leaked images do not include measurements, making it difficult to determine the exact screen size or thickness of the foldable iPhone.
Despite these unknowns, the images appear to align with earlier design sketches that surfaced in late 2025. That consistency has led some industry watchers to believe the overall concept may be relatively close to Apple’s current development direction.
Supply chain analysts have also noted that large scale component orders related to foldable iPhones have not yet appeared in industry reports. This has made it harder to confirm whether Apple is preparing for a near term launch or continuing internal testing.
Growing Demand for Advanced Smartphone Form Factors
The global smartphone market has been gradually exploring new device formats as manufacturers attempt to differentiate their products. Foldable phones represent one of the most visible innovations in recent years, offering larger displays while maintaining portability.
These devices appeal to users who want a single product that can function as both a phone and a tablet. Larger displays allow for improved productivity, gaming, video streaming, and multitasking experiences.
However foldable devices also face challenges. The flexible displays require advanced materials and hinge systems that must withstand thousands of opening cycles. Manufacturers have spent several years improving these mechanisms to reduce durability concerns.
Apple’s engineering approach typically focuses on long term reliability and design simplicity. If the company introduces a foldable iPhone, analysts expect Apple to emphasize durability, seamless software integration, and performance optimization.
Outlook
Apple is widely expected to reveal new hardware products in September 2026, and industry speculation suggests a foldable iPhone could be among them. If the leaked images prove accurate, the device may introduce a hybrid smartphone tablet experience that could reshape the premium mobile device market.
