Sherry Rehman Rejects Telecom Amendment Bill, Demands Key Changes

The PPP has opposed the Pakistan Telecommunication (Amendment) Bill 2026, saying it will not support the legislation in the Senate unless controversial clauses are reviewed by the relevant standing committee. Senator Sherry Rehman raised concerns over provisions related to telecom infrastructure, right of way, and private property rights, calling for public hearings and further amendments before the bill is passed.

Meezan Bank Approves Rs31.45bn Housing Finance

Meezan Bank has approved over Rs31.45 billion in housing finance across 4,424 applications under the government’s Wazir-e-Azam Apna Ghar Programme — Ghar Ho Tu Apna. The bank’s cumulative disbursements have crossed Rs4 billion, supporting around 650 families in their journey towards homeownership. Financing gained significant momentum in August 2026, when Meezan Bank disbursed approximately Rs2.2 billion in a single month, representing more than half of its total disbursements under the programme.

Rohri-Multan Rail Proposal Faces Scrutiny

The government is reviewing the proposed 460-kilometre Rohri-Multan section of Pakistan’s delayed ML-1 railway project, estimated to cost over Rs450 billion. A high-level committee led by Planning Minister Ahsan Iqbal withheld approval after noting that locomotives, coaches and operating expenses were excluded from the estimate. An independent third-party cost review has been ordered. Financing options under consideration include the PSDP, foreign funding, public-private partnerships, commercial bank loans and domestic capital markets.

Pakistan Secures Credit Rating Upgrade

Moody’s Ratings upgraded Pakistan’s local and foreign currency issuer and senior unsecured debt ratings from Caa1 to B3, citing stronger foreign exchange reserves, improved governance, lower domestic borrowing costs and sustained macroeconomic stabilization. The agency maintained a stable outlook, expecting governance reforms to help preserve gains in Pakistan’s external position and strengthen fiscal indicators.
