Max Verstappen to Compete in Nürburgring 24 Hours With Mercedes GT3 Team

Four time Formula One world champion Max Verstappen is set to compete in the prestigious Nürburgring 24 Hours endurance race in May, marking a significant step into another form of professional motorsport. The Dutch driver will participate in the race with his own GT3 racing team under the banner of Team Verstappen Racing, supported by Red Bull and running a Mercedes AMG GT3 car. Verstappen will share driving duties with Austrian racer Lucas Auer, Andorran driver Jules Gounon and Spanish driver Daniel Juncadella. The announcement has attracted attention across the motorsport world as one of Formula One’s most dominant drivers prepares to test his skills in one of the most demanding endurance races in global racing.
Nürburgring Endurance Race Adds New Challenge for Verstappen
The Nürburgring 24 Hours is widely regarded as one of the toughest endurance races in international motorsport. The race takes place on the legendary Nürburgring Nordschleife circuit in Germany, a track often referred to as the Green Hell due to its challenging layout and unpredictable conditions. The race combines the historic Nordschleife section with the modern Grand Prix circuit to create a demanding 25 kilometre loop that tests drivers’ skill, stamina and precision over a full twenty four hour competition.
Verstappen’s participation reflects his growing interest in competing across different racing disciplines beyond Formula One. The Red Bull driver has already taken part in several sportscar racing events and has gained experience on the Nürburgring circuit in previous competitions. Motorsport experts consider endurance racing to be a unique challenge because multiple drivers share the same car and must coordinate their driving stints across day and night conditions while maintaining consistent performance.
Preparation Race Scheduled Before Main Event
In preparation for the endurance race Verstappen will also compete in a preliminary event at the Nürburgring scheduled for March 21. The race was recently rescheduled to fit within Verstappen’s busy Formula One calendar, allowing him to participate between two major Grand Prix events. The preparation race will provide valuable track time for Verstappen and his teammates as they fine tune their strategy and familiarize themselves with the Mercedes AMG GT3 car ahead of the main endurance challenge.
The Nürburgring 24 Hours will take place on May 16 and May 17, positioned between the Miami Grand Prix on May 3 and the Canadian Grand Prix scheduled for May 24 in Montreal. Balancing these racing commitments highlights the demanding schedule faced by elite drivers competing in multiple motorsport categories.
Team Verstappen Racing Enters With Mercedes AMG GT3
Verstappen will compete in the endurance race through his own racing organization, Team Verstappen Racing, which will field a Mercedes AMG GT3 car carrying the driver’s familiar racing number. The team will feature a lineup of experienced drivers who bring expertise in endurance and GT racing. Lucas Auer, Jules Gounon and Daniel Juncadella are all accomplished competitors with extensive experience in sportscar and endurance racing championships.
The use of a Mercedes AMG GT3 car highlights the growing collaboration between manufacturers and independent racing teams in endurance competitions. GT3 vehicles are designed specifically for long distance racing and feature modifications that allow them to perform reliably across extended races lasting many hours. These cars must combine speed with durability, making teamwork and technical preparation essential components of success.
Verstappen Expands Racing Portfolio Beyond Formula One
Max Verstappen’s decision to compete in endurance racing reflects his broader interest in exploring different forms of motorsport while continuing his Formula One career. The 28 year old driver has previously expressed interest in participating in other racing series and has taken part in sportscar competitions as part of his racing development. Endurance events such as the Nürburgring 24 Hours require drivers to adapt to different racing styles compared with Formula One where races are shorter and drivers compete individually rather than sharing cars.
Verstappen has previously obtained the required DMSB Permit Nordschleife which allows drivers to compete in events on the challenging Nürburgring track. In earlier competitions he participated in the Nürburgring Langstrecken Serie event known as NLS9 where his team secured a victory. That experience provided valuable preparation for the upcoming endurance race and strengthened Verstappen’s confidence heading into the competition.
Historic Nürburgring Race Remains Iconic Motorsport Event
The Nürburgring 24 Hours has been held annually since 1970 and remains one of the most iconic events in global motorsport. The race attracts professional teams, manufacturers and drivers from around the world who compete in multiple classes of vehicles ranging from GT3 machines to production based sportscars. The event is known for its unpredictable weather conditions, long night racing segments and demanding track layout which make it one of the most challenging competitions in endurance racing.
The Nordschleife section of the circuit gained its legendary reputation during the early decades of Formula One racing in the 1960s and 1970s. Its narrow corners, steep elevation changes and long high speed sections continue to test even the most experienced drivers.
Outlook for Verstappen’s Nürburgring Challenge
Max Verstappen’s entry into the Nürburgring 24 Hours adds another dimension to his already impressive motorsport career. Competing in endurance racing while maintaining a full Formula One schedule highlights his ambition to explore different racing disciplines and challenge himself in new environments. With an experienced driver lineup and preparation races planned before the main event, Verstappen’s team will aim to deliver a competitive performance in one of the most demanding endurance races in the world.
