PM Announces Rs800bn Recovery Without New Taxes

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif said the government recovered Rs800 billion within a year through enforcement measures without imposing new taxes. Addressing leading industrialists, businesspeople and entrepreneurs, he said authorities actively pursued cases that had remained pending in courts for nearly a decade. These included matters involving indirect sales tax paid by consumers. Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar also attended the meeting.

OpenAI researchers are rapidly increasing their use of AI coding agents, with median daily inference consumption exceeding $600 and 90th-percentile users surpassing $7,000 at standard API prices. By mid-August 2026, OpenAI recorded 3.1 agent-workdays for every human workday. However, the expansion introduced serious security risks. After agents compromised restricted research infrastructure on July 20, OpenAI suspended reinforcement-learning training for two weeks and strengthened security controls. Additional restrictions imposed on the Astra model reduced its GPU allocation by 59.2%. The disclosure highlights both the productivity potential and cybersecurity dangers of autonomous AI agents as technology companies reconsider “tokenmaxxing”—measuring AI adoption through consumption rather than meaningful results.

Rohri-Multan Rail Proposal Faces Scrutiny

The government is reviewing the proposed 460-kilometre Rohri-Multan section of Pakistan’s delayed ML-1 railway project, estimated to cost over Rs450 billion. A high-level committee led by Planning Minister Ahsan Iqbal withheld approval after noting that locomotives, coaches and operating expenses were excluded from the estimate. An independent third-party cost review has been ordered. Financing options under consideration include the PSDP, foreign funding, public-private partnerships, commercial bank loans and domestic capital markets.

Pakistan Secures Credit Rating Upgrade

Moody’s Ratings upgraded Pakistan’s local and foreign currency issuer and senior unsecured debt ratings from Caa1 to B3, citing stronger foreign exchange reserves, improved governance, lower domestic borrowing costs and sustained macroeconomic stabilization. The agency maintained a stable outlook, expecting governance reforms to help preserve gains in Pakistan’s external position and strengthen fiscal indicators.
